Setup:

To change or enter source channel parameters on this page,move the cursor to the desired field and enter the parameter value with the DATA ENTRY keys of the front panel or computer keyboard.

Each time an entry is made the cursor automatically moves to the next field.



















Parameter Entry:

When entering numeric values on this page, it is not necessary to enter the value unit. The unit for voltage values is V (volt); for current values, A (ampere); and for time values, s (seconds). When the ENTER key is pressed the unit will be automatically entered. Also, each time a numerical value is inserted in a field, softkeys change and provide the possible units for the field. By pressing a softkey, value will be entered in the selected field using the unit displayed in the softkey pressed. Voltage, current and frequency limits for each field are listed below:

Measurement Function Selection:
Measurement Function can be selected with the softkeys when the cursor is in the FUNC field. The following functions are available:

Measurement range:
Measurement range is set to AUTO by default. This means that optimum range is automatically selected for each measurement. Measurement range can only be set to AUTO.

















Test Frequency:
The HP4284A operates from 20 Hz to 1 Mhz with 8610 frequency steps in between. When numeric data is entered, the nearest available frequency point is automatically set.

There are two ways to set the test frequency. One is to use the softkeys, and the other is to use the numeric entry keys. Perform the following steps to set the test frequency:

  1. Move the cursor to the FREQ field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • INCR 1 - Increments the value up to the next sequentially higher decade value
    • INCR 2 - Increments the value up to the next sequentially higher frequency point
    • DECR 2 - Decrements the value down to the next sequentially lower frequency point
    • DECR 1 - Decrements the value down to the next sequentially lower decade value
  2. Select and set the test frequency using either the softkeys or the numeric entry keys. When the test frequency is entered using the numeric entry keys, the softkey labels are changed to the available units ('Hz', 'kHz','Mhz'), and so you can use these softkeys instead of the ENTER key to enter the units and enter the data. When the enter key is used, the numeric data is entered with Hz as the default unit.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

DC Bias:
The HP 4284A with option 001 installed and Hi-PW field on has internal bias voltage selections of 0V to ±40 V. The dc bias current can be set from 0 to ±100 mA.

Front panel operation for setting the DC Bias:
  1. Move the cursor to the BIAS field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • INCR: increases the dc bias level
    • DECR: decreases the dc bias level
  2. Set the dc bias to your desired bias using either the softkeys or the numeric entry keys. When the dc bias is entered using the numeric entry keys, the softkey labels are changed to the available units ('mV', 'V', 'uA', 'mA' and 'A'), and so you can use these softkeys instead of the ENTER key. When the ENTER key is used, the numeric data is entered with V or A as the default unit.




 
 
 
 
 


Oscillator Level:
The HP 4284A's oscillator level can be set as the effective value (RMS value) of a sine wave of the test frequency from the HP 4284A's internal oscillator. You can set either the oscillator voltage level or the oscillator current level.


Front panel operation for setting the Oscillator Level:
  1. Move the cursor to the LEVEL field. The following softkeys will be displayed.
  2. Select and set the oscillator level using either the softkeys or the numeric entry keys. When the oscillator level is entered using the numeric entry keys, the softkey labels are changed to the available units labels ('mV', 'V', 'uA', 'mA', and 'A'), and you can use these softkeys to enter the units and enter the data instead of the ENTER key. Integration time:
The HP 4284A ses an integrating A-D converter in the internal circuits to convert the analog signal to a digital signal. The integration time (INTEG TIME) is the time required to perform an A-D conversion. Generally, a longer conversion time will result in more stable and accurate measurement results. SHORT, MEDIUM or LONG integration times can be selected.

Front Panel Operation for Setting the Integration Time:
  1. Move the cursor to the INTEG field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • SHORT
    • MED
    • LONG

Trigger Mode:
The trigger mode can be set to INTernal trigger or MANual trigger.When the trigger mode is set to INT, the HP4284A continuously repeats measurements on any display page under the DISPLAY FORMAT MENU key. When the trigger mode is set to MAN, the HP4284A performs a single measurement on any page under the DISPLAY FORMAT MENU key every time the TRIGGER key on the front panel is pressed.

Front Panel Operation for Setting the Trigger Mode:
  1. Move the cursor to the TRIG field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • INT
    • MAN
    • EXT

Averaging Rate
The HP4284A's averaging rate function aritmethically averages the results of two or more A-D conversions. The number of conversions averaged can be set from 1 to 256, in steps of 1.

Front Panel Operation for Setting the Averaging Rate:
  1. Move the cursor to the AVG field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • INCR - used to increment the averaging rate (1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128 and 256)
    • DECR - used to decrement the averaging rate (1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128 and 256)
  2. Use the softkeys to set the averaging rate, or enter the averaging rate using the DATA ENTRY KEYS and ENTER key.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 


Automatic Level Control
The automatic level control (ALC) function regulates the actual test level (voltage across the DUT, or current through the DUT) to your desired level. So by using this function, the test signal voltage or current level at the DUT can be held constant.

Front Panel Operation for Setting the Automatic Level Control:
  1. Move the cursor to the ALC field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • ON
    • OFF
  2. Press the ON softkey to set the automatic level control function to ON. Press the OFF softkey to set the automatic level control function OFF.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 


Voltage Monitor:
The voltage monitor option is set to OFF by default and cannot be changed. This means you cannot monitor the actual voltage level across the device under test.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

High Power Mode:
The high power mode option is set to ON by default and cannot be changed. This means the HP4284A will operate in High Power mode, providing a wider measurement range.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 


Intensity Monitor:
The current monitor option is set to OFF by default and cannot be changed. This means you cannot monitor the actual current level across the device under test.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 


Bias Current Isolation Function:
This function prevents the dc current from affecting the measurement input circuit. The DCI:ISO field allows you to set the bias current isolation function to ON or OFF.
Front Panel Operation for Setting the bias current isolation function:
  1. Move the cursor to the DCI:ISO field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • ON
    • OFF

Delay Time:
The HP4284A's delay time function allows you to set a trigger delay so the HP4284A will delay the start of the measurement after it is triggered. The trigger delay time can be set from 0 to 999ms in 1ms steps.
Front Panel Operation for Setting the Delay Time:
  1. Move the cursor to the DELAY field.
  2. Enter the delay time using the DATA ENTRY KEYS. When one of the data entry keys is pressed, the following unit softkeys will be displayed. These can be used instead of the ENTER.

Deviation Measurement Function:
The deviation measurement function allows you to display the deviation value instead of the actual measurement value. The deviation value is the value calculated by taking the difference between the actual measurement value and a previously stored reference value.

Deviation measurements can be made for either or both primary parameter and/or secondary parameter measurements. There are two types of deviation measurements.
Front Panel Operation for the Deviation Measurement Function:
  1. Move the cursor to the A field.
  2. Enter the reference value for the primary parameter using the DATA ENTRY KEYS.
  3. Move the cursor to the B field. Enter the reference value for the secondary parameter using the DATA ENTRY KEYS.
  4. Move the cursor to the REF A field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • ^ ABS
    • ^ %
    • OFF
  5. Select and press a softkey to select the deviation mode for the primary parameter.
  6. Move the cursor to the (REF) B field. The following softkeys will be displayed:
    • ^ ABS
    • ^ %
    • OFF
  7. Select and press a softkey to select the deviation mode for the secondary parameter.
